Artists Statement
Painting takes me on a journey from the first to the last brushstroke as I explore colour, texture, form and composition through the act of painting. This is a way of expressing my emotions, my state of mind or inner life rather than depicting the visual world in front of me. It is a search to try and reveal thoughts, emotions and truths that cannot be conveyed in words.
By using colour to an emotional effect I layer the painting giving it depth and texture. By scratching the surface I can reveal the colours below. Also, depending on the use of colour or type of canvas, the under-painting will reveal itself as it hovers just under or over the surface.
Having used a variety of media including pastel, ink and conte, I am currently painting in oil and acrylic. I have done figurative and landscape but mostly concentrate on abstract pieces influenced by the abstract expressionism and automatism movements but also inspired by the visual, emotional, cerebral and spiritual; in other words...life.
Artists that have inspired me include Mark Rothko, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Willem de Kooning, Marlene Dumas, Emily Carr, Alice Neel, Susan Rothenberg, Picasso, Paula Rego and Egon Scheile, to name a few.
